Why Older Kids Actually Want to Show Up for My Photo Sessions

I personally LOVE this stage of life: teenagers! Most people think awkward and uncooperative when they image a family session with their older kids, but nothing could be further from the truth. Older kids can absolutely relax and enjoy being in front of the camera-it just takes a little connection, a sense of humor, and letting them feel like themselves.

I connect easily and quickly with the moody, challenging teenagers who might not think they look good in photos! I am so here for the challenge of getting them to warm up and show us ‘all’ their personality. Giving them some say in what they wear and not over-directing during the shoot goes a lonnng way in capturing real, natural moments.

Treating the older kids with respect and genuine interest is the key. Being playful and fun is too. It does take a little extra work from the photographer, but so worth it if you can get them to buy in!

Here are some tips for getting the older kids to buy in to the experience.

  1. Activity based-kayaking, fishing, swimming, beach shenanigans, racing, competitions, kickball—-making memories is the BONUS! Might just be the most you have all touched, laughed and talked in weeks!

  2. Bring the playlist-fun music. Let them choose and you will see them relax a little more.

  3. “Do it for mama”. This usually hits a soft spot (deep within than harder exterior). LOL

Giving the older children a role during the sesson -whether it’s making their younger sibling laugh, helping pick the location, or suggesting a pose goes a long way, too. When older kids feel included and valued, they’re much more likely to engage naturally and enjoy the experience.

No need to stress about whether your older child will warm up to the camera-I’ve got it covered. With a little finesse and guine connection, we’ll capture natural expressions and real personality every time.
